Some observations on the closure of the anterior fontanelle.

چکیده
Early observers (Elsasser, 1843; Friedleben, 1860; Roger, 1859) have claimed that the dimensions of the anterior fontanelle of the human skull increase from the time of birth until about the age of 9 months, and that it is, as a rule, closed at the age of 18 months. Scammon (1923), reviewing this literature, challenged these observations on the grounds that the material studied involved European children of the poorer classes, many of them born prematurely, and many suffering from rickets. He argued that the observations did not necessarily apply to the 'better nourished and more rapidly growing American children', but he did not publish any figures of his own to substantiate his views. Zahorsky (1944) published observations on the date of closure of the anterior fontanelle in American children. Since his subjects were all seen in private practice they probably do not represent an accurate cross-section of the population. He estimated closure of the fontanelle by palpation and tried to correlate the time when it occurred with the type of feed the infants had received in the first four months of life. Aisenson (1950) examined 1,677 New York children in his health clinic and estimated that the mean age of closure of the anterior fontanelle was 13 * 5 months.

Use of posterior fontanelle in the ultrasound diagnosis of intraventricular/periventricular hemorrhage.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the use of the posterior fontanelle in premature neonates (< 37 weeks) with a birth weight < 1,500 g in the ultrasound diagnosis of intraventricular/periventricular hemorrhage and to assess whether the use of the anterior fontanelle associated with the posterior fontanelle changes the interrater agreement. METHODS Eighty-five premature neonates were evaluated in this pro...

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare autosomal dominant skeletal disease. CCD is caused by mutation in the gene on 6p21 encoding transcription factor CBFA1, i.e. runt-related transcription factor 2(RUNX2). The disease is characterized by a persistently open anterior fontanelle and skull sutures, hypoplastic or aplastic clavicles, dental abnormalities, short stature, a wide pubic symphysis, a...
متن کاملComparison of Three Different Methods of Skin Closure in Anterior Midline Incisions of the Knee
Background: Few clinical trials have studied the functional and cosmetic outcomes of different closure tech- niques of surgical incisions. Skin wound and incision closure methods may influence the healing process and cos- metic outcome. The present study aims at comparing three different suture techniques of skin closure. Methods: In a clinical trial, sixty patients with anterior cruciate liga...

Background: It has been estimated that 67 million people worldwide are affected with a primary glaucoma and that one-third have primary angle closure glaucoma. We aimed to determine the biometric differences between the eyes of patients with acute attack of primary angle closure and their non-involved fellow eyes. Methods: Twenty eight patients with acute attack of primary angle closure were re...

INTRODUCTION Assessing the anterior fontanelle size is an important component of routine neonatal examination. For meaningful interpretation of fontanelle size, normal reference values are essential. Normal values for the fontanelle size in Sri Lankan newborns are not available. OBJECTIVES To investigate characteristics of anterior fontanelle size at birth in Sri Lankan babies. METHODS A de...
